- ABC is delighted to announce another nationwide competition for ALL current ABC members
- Your ABC Committee is offering every member an opportunity to partake in another exciting competition where you make the choices on the binding, whether it be book craft, traditional binding, leather binding or maybe a rebind with exciting covers and techniques, embossing - you decide!
- Ronald John Sansom 1926 - 2022
- Founding and life member, John was the vital core of our organisation from the very beginning - the first ABC meeting was held at his home on 22 May 1988. John filled a number of roles for ABC from 1989 through to 2020 but is best known as our Membership and Materials Manager. John was always supportive, knowledgeable, and encouraging, especially to new members, often knowing what you needed before you did.
- John was an excellent binder; most of his bindings were full and half leather bound books. He particularly enjoyed rebinding books that linked to what he liked reading or needed to be preserved, or that were for his family.
- After his death in 2022 the Committee decided, it was fitting to recognise his immeasurable contribution and support over those 25 plus years by offering an annual competition in his memory.
- The John Sansom Memorial Competition will start on 1 April 2023 and go to 15 August 2023 You can create a binding, book craft or rebind in leather or any associated technique.
- Just a few rules:
- You must be a paid up ABC member for the year 2023 or sponsored by a current ABC member
- Online enrolment NOW CLOSED
- Completed books are to be delivered to 8A Astrolabe Place, Gulf Harbour, Auckland 0930 by 15 August, 2023.
- Awards will be given in three categories: Gold, Silver and Bronze.
- Bindings will be judged on quality of craftsmanship, appropriateness of design, use of material, originality of the project and skill level of the binder. Judges will not make a distinction between styles/ types of binding.
- Participants must be willing to allow ABC to exhibit their entry over an extended period of time. ABC is hoping to facilitate a national touring exhibition around the groups by funding the transport of the entries. This is an exciting way to give your local public an opportunity to see a wide range of bookbinding styles.
- Participation in the competition is at your own risk. All submitted books will be handled with the utmost care.
