AboutKeepers of the Craft since 1974For the appreciation and practice of letterpress printing
In 1973 the founder of the Association of Handcraft Printers NZ Incorporated (AHP), Walter Lemm, saw a need for communication between those printers outside the industry who were interested in exchanging ideas and improving their craft. Initially this took the form of an exchange of material. The organisation and its journal of collected material were named Vinculum. Later the organisation changed its name to AHP but retained the Vinculum name for its biannual production.
AHP is made up of people interested in the practice of letterpress printing and all that is entailed in the craft – from the machinery, some of which has needed to be refurbished after lying unused for many years, to the skilled operating of the equipment, often by men who served long apprenticeships to learn their trade and have much to teach those who are interested in learning the skills and thrill of printing traditional letterpress.
There are also those who love letterpress for its tactile nature, the quality of the paper and the beauty of the impressed ink. Whatever your connection to the world of letterpress, you are welcome to join us in the appreciation and practice of letterpress printing. More recent innovations such as polymer plate printing, embossing and debossing, and paper crafts such as bookbinding and papermaking are becoming part of the letterpress family.
Members receive quarterly joint (with ABC) newsletters and the annual Vinculum, an A5 booklet of printing examples submitted by members that reflect the skill, ingenuity, and interest of the printers. Since 2015 members have also been invited to contribute a ‘month’ to the AHP calendar. These are distributed to every financial AHP member as part of their subscription.
AHP’s membership is open to anyone interested in letterpress, wherever they are.
MembershipThe ’Special Offer’ subscription for New Zealand members is only NZ$20 which for a short time only also entitles members to reciprocal membership of the Association of Book Crafts. The membership year runs from January to December.
We can either point at the current AHP website for membership or set something up if you wishJust transfer your $20 to our bank account ASB 12-3086-0110545-00, don’t forget to add your name and put Membership in the particulars field.
