BIO: Louise James is the sole bookbinder of The Binding Studio, based in West Auckland’s Waitakere Ranges.
She started bookbinding in 2001 under the tuition of Anna Caithness & Helen Everest (the creators/owners of designer bindery Bound to Last).From 2009 to 2013 she was the bookbinding technician at AUT’s Art and Design School, as well as working in her own bindery.
With over 20 years of experience and accolades in the industry, Lou balances time between binding commissions, teaching workshops, selling bookbinding supplies, all alongside raising a vivacious pre-schooler.
Here is what the judge said about this entry:
"I know this isn’t a book, so does it really qualify as an entry in a bookbinding competition? Well, I’m going to put my reputation on the line and say, on this occasion, yes it does. Just as a bat won the Bird of the Year competition, Louise James swoops in to take 1st prize in the craft/modern category for ‘Board Shear’. The detail and quality, skills and techniques applied to this work would be essential qualities in crafting a fine binding. Along with the work itself, the story that sits alongside it is adorable.
